WORKS of FIRE, SAND, CLAY, WAX and ORE
New Works by Multi-Media Artists:
Karen Adler Abboud (New Orleans, LA): Encaustic Paintings - Karen Adler Abboud's chosen medium is encaustic assemblages, using encaustic (wax) pigment bars, found objects and collage materials (rice paper.) Through layering and rearranging the transparent patches of color, she references nature in its ever flowing state. She conveys the forcefulness and stillness of nature simultaneously in the juxtaposition of worn, weathered objects with the fluid elements.
Richard Bennett (Birmingham, AL): Fired Earthenware and Cast Iron - Richard Bennett's artistic inspiration comes from the organic and natural aspects of the environment. The mediums and basic earth elements of clay and iron are molded and sculpted into contorted, circular and repetitive displays of creativity.
Francine Stock (New Orleans, LA): Glass and Mixed-Media - Francine Stock's work explores the latent concepts which bubble forth when everyday materials combine in uncommon juxtaposition. Her primary medium is warm glass, softened by heat to reveal its sensual nature. The glass is connected to aluminum, copper, rubber, hemp and burlap in methods that evoke textile, bookbinding and the building arts. Three of the pieces include here in 'ELEMENTAL' are multi-faceted glass chains. The individual links are assembled and fused from multiple layers of small glass bricks. In BRIDGE and MANDALA :: MANDORLA the chains are strapped to woven rubber canvas made from recycled bicycle inner tubes and stretched across a wooden frame. The rubber and glass play off each other in a pure material dialogue of tension, elasticity and rigidity. A series of TEXT::TILES continue an ongoing interest in the evolution of language and drawing and the correlations between books and walls. Francine's art work is heavily influenced by her studies of bookmaking, architecture and philosophy. The monumental WOVEN PANEL is a fused glass panel assembled from pieces of recycled mid-century green jalousie glass. The panel is bound and suspended with sisal rope.

- January 5th, 2008 - We open our doors at 527 St. Joseph Street with our 1st Annual 'Gulf-South Regional Contemporary Art Exhibit' carefully curated by ourselves. Would people appreciate our curatorial take or would it flop? It was one of the largest opening receptions we had ever attended, let alone hosted, and at the end of the night we knew we were onto something. We had surprise guests from NOMA, The Ogden Museum, The CAC, The City of New Orleans, The State of Louisiana as well as prominent art loving business leaders who themselves were making positive impacts all over New Orleans, post-Katrina, all offering meaningful and encouraging compliments that we still keep in the forefront of our minds whenever things get tough. Local and regional recommendations and reviews were good so it was back to hitting the ground running. This exhibit is posted online at
- February, 2008 - We open our first major international exhibition titled, CONNECTION, featuring emerging artists from 7 different countries. We were fortunate to have the curatorial vision of Caroline Worthington as our first international guest curator. The Bridge in Bridge for Emerging Contemporary Art was taking shape. The new New Orleans based (now national) publication, 'ArtVoices Magazine' and several writers and publications outside of New Orleans took notice of this unique exhibition being presented in the city of New Orleans and the Bridge continued to expand. The exhibit is posted online at
- March, 2008 - We host our first solo show 'Oil on Gold' featuring Master Painter, Gary Chapman. An artist who rarely exhibits outside of museum settings entrusted us as a commercial gallery to present his works to New Orleans and to the rest of the world via
- April/May, 2008 - 'MIRROR for the 21st Century', curated by international guest curator, Helen Pheby, PhD, Deputy Curator of Yorkshire Sculpture Park, England unfolds to very successful reviews and recommendations both locally, nationally and internationally. We happily discover Blurb.com and make our first foray into publishing with this catalog posted at
- June/July 2008 - Our second gallery director curated exhibition opens, titled 'Hybrids & Other Sorts'. It's our first show resulting from a national call to artists and we choose several works by 9 American artists including 1 artist from New Orleans, Kathy Sautter. This show is by far the best received show we've had to date. The artists are happy and the collectors and visitors to both our physical space and
- August, 2008 - Over 2 months ago we start this experiment that came from an idea that popped into Melissa's head, once again, while in the shower. (We guess water helps fire signs to flow.) Let's let the world-public curate our next exhibit. It could result in disaster on our walls, rafters and floors but let's stretch and see what happens. If it fails, so be it. At least we took a chance and gave the art-loving public an opportunity to participate in something that they might not otherwise have. Luckily, we had our assistant Laura back then. (Good luck in NYC, Laura. We already miss you!) We put out an international call to artists then put a call out for guest curators/voting participants to vote for their favorite works. We were slammed and surprised by how many people participated. Laura was a trooper and manually registered all 400+ votes from 11 different countries. (We learned a few things and will have some automation next year. People had fun so, yes, we have plans to do it again in 2009.) Once all was said and done we learned that a similar effort was happening almost simultaneously at the Brooklyn Art Museum. The Top 10 artists were published in
'CURATE THIS!' 2008. The publication can be found at
