WORKS of FIRE, SAND, CLAY, WAX and ORE

New Works by Multi-Media Artists:

Karen Adler Abboud (New Orleans, LA): Encaustic Paintings - Karen Adler Abboud's chosen medium is encaustic assemblages, using encaustic (wax) pigment bars, found objects and collage materials (rice paper.)  Through layering and rearranging the transparent patches of color, she references nature in its ever flowing state.  She conveys the forcefulness and stillness of nature simultaneously in the juxtaposition of worn, weathered objects with the fluid elements.

Richard Bennett (Birmingham, AL): Fired Earthenware and Cast Iron - Richard Bennett's artistic inspiration comes from the organic and natural aspects of the environment. The mediums and basic earth elements of clay and iron are molded and sculpted into contorted, circular and repetitive displays of creativity.

Francine Stock (New Orleans, LA): Glass and Mixed-Media - Francine Stock's work explores the latent concepts which bubble forth when everyday materials combine in uncommon juxtaposition. Her primary medium is warm glass, softened by heat to reveal its sensual nature. The glass is connected to aluminum, copper, rubber, hemp and burlap in methods that evoke textile, bookbinding and the building arts. Three of the pieces include here in 'ELEMENTAL' are multi-faceted glass chains. The individual links are assembled and fused from multiple layers of small glass bricks. In BRIDGE and MANDALA :: MANDORLA the chains are strapped to woven rubber canvas made from recycled bicycle inner tubes and stretched across a wooden frame. The rubber and glass play off each other in a pure material dialogue of tension, elasticity and rigidity. A series of TEXT::TILES continue an ongoing interest in the evolution of language and drawing and the correlations between books and walls. Francine's art work is heavily influenced by her studies of bookmaking, architecture and philosophy. The monumental WOVEN PANEL is a fused glass panel assembled from pieces of recycled mid-century green jalousie glass. The panel is bound and suspended with sisal rope.

BECA gallery launches the New Collectors Club delivering affordable art + design

Logo3

BECA gallery owners, Co-Directors and artists, Kurt Schlough and Melissa Roberts, have created a new project titled the New Collectors Club to give artists and designers a way to gain wider exposure for their works while simultaneously giving both new and established collectors a very affordable option to bring special works of art and design into their daily lives.

"After our first 6 months at BECA gallery we realized that our gallery program was leaving out a large population of contemporary art and design lovers who wanted the opportunity to take small steps toward becoming experienced collectors of art and design. We needed to find out how to bring this into the BECA picture so the New Collectors Club was created to make those additional opportunities available. It gives new collectors the opportunity to become familiar with new artists and new works and basically get their feet wet before leaping into larger purchases. More established collectors have the same opportunity to gain exposure to new artists and to find new works that compliment their existing collections. Art enriches the lives of every person so we want it to be as accessible as possible."

The NCC website www.newcollectorsclub.com is currently in pre-launch mode and you are welcome to browse and take first advantage of the New Collectors Club offerings of original works under $500 and archival pigment print editions. We'll be adding new content daily as we build the New Collectors Club. Should you need immediate assistance, please call BECA gallery at 504.566.8999 or email the New Collectors Clubat newcollectorsclub(at)gmail.com. We look forward to hearing from you.

BECA gallery recognized in 'The New Orleans 100'

'The New Orleans 100' is a very unique and positive project (CNN should take note) created by All Day Buffet who themselves are probably deserving of some of the highest praise on The New New Orleans front. Their latest creation, 'The New Orleans 100' aims to spread the word around the world about "100 of the most innovative and world-changing ideas to take root in the city since Katrina". The list is composed of progressive innovators from both pre- and post- Katrina highlighting what the rest of the world media has missed. They have a goal of reaching 1 million viewers by the anniversary of Hurrican Katrina on Aug 29th. Please visit 'The New Orleans 100'  and help them to spread the word far and wide.

We are extremely honored to be recognized in 'The New Orleans 100'  along with 99 other amazing businesses, projects and efforts all of which are linked directly from their website. It's an eye opening treat to learn about so many positive and progressive things going on here.

There are great things happening in the New New Orleans driven by people with passion, drive and dedication and we're happy to be a part of that positive whole.

Our best,
~ Melissa + Kurt

Giving Back Now, Not Waiting for the Milestone Markers

BECA is an acronym for Bridge for Emerging Contemporary Art and a means by which emerging contemporary art flows between New Orleans and the larger contemporary arts community both nationally and abroad. The artist run gallery is situated in the heart of the New Orleans Arts District located directly across the street from the Contemporary Arts Center and within close walking distance to the Ogden Museum of Southern Art. Half of BECA gallery's exhibitions include works by local and regional emerging contemporary artists and the other half include works by international emerging contemporary artists.

The gallery features innovative and engaging contemporary sculpture, paintings, works on paper, photography, textiles, installations and mixed media works by today's most talented local, regional and international emerging artists. With a combined 20 years of art, architectural and design experience, BECA's Co-Directors also specialize in providing art and design consultation services for both private acquisitions and corporate development projects.

Only 7 months in business and giving back along the way…

One special effort that the gallery Co-Directors, Kurt Schlough and Melissa Roberts, began brewing prior to opening BECA's doors on January 5, 2008 was a philanthropic effort called Benefit 5. This has since evolved into the BECA Foundation set to launch in the Spring '09. In the meantime, the gallery has introduced a broad-based initiative which will benefit numerous non-profit organizations both here in New Orleans and throughout the United States.  BECA gallery is committed to donating 5% of each sale of art or art gift certificate to the (501)(c)(3) non-profit organization of the collector's choice and the gallery looks forward to contributing to many worthy efforts and projects. Several donations of 5% add up in the long run and worthy causes deserve the extra financial assistance.

Below are links to a few of the organizations that have thus far benefited from our 5% Donation Program or whom we expect to benefit in the near future:

- Gulf Restoration Network - www.healthygulf.org
- Prospect.1 New Orleans - U.S. Biennial, Inc. - www.prospectneworleans.org
- Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans - www.no-hunger.org
- The East Jefferson General Hospital Foundation -www.ejgh.org/membership/foundation/foundation.html
- The Hope Program - www.thehopeprogram.org

To learn more about how your non-profit organization can benefit from BECA gallery's 5% Donation Program or to learn more about how you can designate your favorite charitable organization as a beneficiary (no matter what city they may be located in), please email becagallery@gmail.com or call (504) 566-8999. You may visit us at 527 St. Joseph Street, New Orleans, LA or visit us on the web at www.becagallery.com

A letter from Co- Director, Melissa Roberts:

Dear fellow New Orleanians, friends of NOLA and those determined to make a positive impact throughout the USA,

Kurt Schlough and myself are both artists and designers who decided that the best way we could contribute to NOLA's lifting was to give the local and national arts community something it was lacking...a new commercial gallery space that was dedicated to introducing contemporary art by emerging artists from New Orleans and from around the world. While a few gallery spaces here in the New Orleans Arts District were contemplating closing their doors (a few did), we were opening the first set of new gallery doors post-Katrina in this neighborhood.

I left New York City post-Katrina to return home to NOLA in the Spring of '06 amongst a mountain of naysayers. Kurt Schlough, originally from St. Louis, MO, lived in Dallas until he was able to return to NOLA post-Katrina. The thought of taking his energy and talents elsewhere never occurred to him. We met in May of 2006 and things began brewing. Ultimately, it culminated in the opening of the doors of BECA gallery just 7 months ago this past January. We named our space BECA which stands for Bridge for Emerging Contemporary Art and we bring an engaging, high quality, diverse range of local, regional, national and international works of contemporary art from emerging artists to the New Orleans community from our gallery space 527 St. Joseph Street and to the world via our online space at www.becagallery.com The mediums we present range from painting, sculpture, photography, installation and projection to drawing, works on paper, textile works, and mixed media.

It's an econimically shaky time to pour all of your resources into realizing such an endeavor but we're already moving forward within our first 7 months with a program that has thus far exhibited works by over 68 amazingly talented emerging artists and that number is growing each month. Along with that growth are new opportunities that are being presented to BECA that will help us to realize building a true bridge to and from the New Orleans arts community via exchange and partnerships opportunities with other art spaces outside of New Orleans and abroad. There are great things happening in this city fueled by new ideas, never ending passion and relentless drive. The NEW New Orleans has an amazing future ahead.

Our best wishes for your efforts,
~ Melissa + Kurt

7 months in... + Copenhagen calling

We're about 1 month late in getting this report out about what has transpired during our first 6 months here at BECA gallery but when you're rolling non-stop you tend to forget about the clock. Some days we're on cloud 9, 10 and 11 and other days are just plain strange. We've learned that we don't exactly fit in with the old guard art elite in the neighborhood but new blood is always a good thing. Oh and we want to give a shout out to another newbie, The Canary Collective which has just opened its doors in the neighborhood. Welcome!

So we took a short breather after White Linen Night. What finally sunk in was that we've given exhibition opportunities to 68 amazingly talented emerging artists all within only 7 months.  And somewhere along the line we recognized the two of us have a combined 20 years of architectural and design experience. We now also specialize in providing art consultation and design services for both private acquisitions and corporate development projects. Additionally, we began a broad-based initiative where we donate 5% of each sale of art to the (501)(c)(3) non-profit organization of the collector's choice.

We can't wait until January when we'll be popping the cork for our 1st Anniversary, scrapes, smiles and all! So here it is, a look at what's transpired during BECA gallery's first 7 months:

- Seed planted - Past art world experiences and soul-searching lead us to decide to open a contemporary commercial gallery space to feature the work of emerging artists as well as our own works of art and design. A formal gallery exhibition space that would be accommodating to both emerging artists and new collectors would be the ideal. Emerging contemporary artists + high quality, innovative and engaging works + good range of diverse media + affordable prices = best case scenario. Melissa comes up with the acronym BECA while in the shower.

- We search Magazine Street and the 'place to be' Julia Street without being moved to put pen to paper. Then one day our favorite building located across the street for the Contemporary Arts Center has a "commercial space for lease" sign in the ground floor window. Can't press the phone keys fast enough. It's kismet. What better place to be located? The CAC is the heart of contemporary art in New Orleans.  At the CAC there is no tourist art (what our friends outside of New Orleans call our antiques and crawfish paintings) and no elitist old farts, just good contemporary art at a space run by dedicated, passionate people. We sign the lease, make new friends with some very cool folks and then the cosmetic work begins. (Fast forward to space completion because the work was by no means fun.)

Gulf South Regional- January 5th, 2008 - We open our doors at 527 St. Joseph Street with our 1st Annual 'Gulf-South Regional Contemporary Art Exhibit' carefully curated by ourselves. Would people appreciate our curatorial take or would it flop? It was one of the largest opening receptions we had ever attended, let alone hosted, and at the end of the night we knew we were onto something. We had surprise guests from NOMA, The Ogden Museum, The CAC, The City of New Orleans, The State of Louisiana as well as prominent art loving business leaders who themselves were making positive impacts all over New Orleans, post-Katrina, all offering meaningful and encouraging compliments that we still keep in the forefront of our minds whenever things get tough. Local and regional recommendations and reviews were good so it was back to hitting the ground running. This exhibit is posted online at
http://www.becagallery.com/gallery/10736/Gulf-South%20Regional

connection- February, 2008 - We open our first major international exhibition titled, CONNECTION, featuring emerging artists from 7 different countries. We were fortunate to have the curatorial vision of Caroline Worthington as our first international guest curator. The Bridge in Bridge for Emerging Contemporary Art was taking shape. The new New Orleans based (now national) publication, 'ArtVoices Magazine' and several writers and publications outside of New Orleans took notice of this unique exhibition being presented in the city of New Orleans and the Bridge continued to expand. The exhibit is posted online at
http://www.becagallery.com/gallery/10738/c%20o%20n%20n%20e%20c%20t%20i%20o%20n

Gary Chapman - The Affirmation- March, 2008 - We host our first solo show 'Oil on Gold' featuring Master Painter, Gary Chapman. An artist who rarely exhibits outside of museum settings entrusted us as a commercial gallery to present his works to New Orleans and to the rest of the world via www.becagallery.com. Those who saw Gary's works in person were all moved in one direction or the other. It was a rare treat to witness such a range of emotional reactions to his works. Those who are moved to collect his works say that it is an amazing feeling to live with his works. Now that Gary's back from Spain, we're looking forward to having new works at BECA as soon as they're complete. The few works that are still available are posted at
http://www.becagallery.com/gallery/10851/Gary%20Chapman%20-%20OIL%20ON%20GOLD

MIRROR for the 21st Century- April/May, 2008 - 'MIRROR for the 21st Century', curated by international guest curator, Helen Pheby, PhD, Deputy Curator of Yorkshire Sculpture Park, England unfolds to very successful reviews and recommendations both locally, nationally and internationally. We happily discover Blurb.com and make our first foray into publishing with this catalog posted at http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/239842. The full exhibition is posted online at
http://www.becagallery.com/gallery/11401/MIRROR%20for%20the%2021st%20Century  We are captivated by the diversity and quality of works Helen chose for this exhibit and ask artists Maslen & Mehra to allow us to offer the following  additional works to collectors:
http://www.becagallery.com/gallery/12137/ARTISTS:%20MASLEN%20and%20MEHRA The Bridge is now branching out in ways we never thought possible. We need more people power at BECA but don't have time to even stop to interview additional help.

Sugar Hyena - Kira Campbell- June/July 2008 - Our second gallery director curated exhibition opens, titled 'Hybrids & Other Sorts'. It's our first show resulting from a national call to artists and we choose several works by 9 American artists including 1 artist from New Orleans, Kathy Sautter. This show is by far the best received show we've had to date. The artists are happy and the collectors and visitors to both our physical space and www.becagallery.com are happily acquiring new
works although not as many as we had hoped for. Several works remain available at
http://www.becagallery.com/gallery/12436/HYBRIDS%20and%20OTHER%20SORTS but on the flipside, lots of press interest is happening both in and beyond New Orleans. Collectors both local and national really begin to discover that we have some of highest quality original works at the most affordable prices on the planet. No ebay black hole, just a well edited selection of affordable works that we fell in love with.

'Preliminary Deception' by Barbie L'Hoste- August, 2008 - Over 2 months ago we start this experiment that came from an idea that popped into Melissa's head, once again, while in the shower. (We guess water helps fire signs to flow.) Let's let the world-public curate our next exhibit. It could result in disaster on our walls, rafters and floors but let's stretch and see what happens. If it fails, so be it. At least we took a chance and gave the art-loving public an opportunity to participate in something that they might not otherwise have.  Luckily, we had our assistant Laura back then. (Good luck in NYC, Laura. We already miss you!) We put out an international call to artists then put a call out for guest curators/voting participants to vote for their favorite works. We were slammed and surprised by how many people participated. Laura was a trooper and manually registered all 400+ votes from 11 different countries. (We learned a few things and will have some automation next year. People had fun so, yes, we have plans to do it again in 2009.) Once all was said and done we learned that a similar effort was happening almost simultaneously at the Brooklyn Art Museum. The Top 10 artists were published in 'CURATE THIS!' 2008. The publication can be found at http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/301963 and the works which received the highest number of votes may be found
online at http://www.becagallery.com/gallery/12562/CURATE%20THIS!

Then the TOP 4 artists from 'CURATE THIS!' 2008 were invited to exhibit their works at BECA gallery during 'FOUR' which opened last Saturday, August 2nd on White Linen Night, an annual fundraiser for the Contemporary Arts Center (http://www.cacno.org)  It was a crazy and fun night for everyone. One local writer decided that the art exhibited during WLN was 'tepid' and 'banal' and that none of the galleries engaged in any 'risk-taking'. I guess when you don't bother to walk half a block over to see what we're up to, you miss out on one of the most risky exhibits any commercial gallery could ever embark upon. Luckily, the risk and the associated quality and diversity of the works haven't been lost on other writers and also art critics. And as a result of the growing interest in  'FOUR', all of the TOP 4 participating artists: Don Gurewitz, Barbie L'Hoste, Joetta Maue and Patricia Zalisko have been recognized by various writers in print and online. As we continue our efforts to connect with other art enthusiasts from around the world, the BECA Bridge expands. One of the more exciting results of this expansion has been the recent offer of an international exhibit opportunity in Copenhagen to Barbie L'Hoste. Congratulations to Barbie for this international interest! We only have a few of Barbie's works still available at the gallery. They're moving fast now that the interest in her work is growing so rapidly. Don't miss out on this opportunity. Barbie is definitely on the rise. Several of the works in 'FOUR' are available online at
http://www.becagallery.com/gallery/13261/FOUR%20-%20A%20Group%20Exhibition%20of%20Contemporary%20Art

More is brewing at BECA but we have to get back to work on locating more interns and staff to assist us in our growth! With our daily efforts come new opportunities that will help us to realize building a true Bridge to and from the New Orleans arts community via exchange and partnership opportunities with other art spaces outside of New Orleans and abroad. There are great things happening in this city fueled by new ideas, never ending passion and relentless drive. The NEW New Orleans has an amazing future ahead. Thank you to each of you who have supported us and the emerging artists we have worked with over the past 7 months. Your support and encouragement is what keeps us rolling.

Our best wishes,
~ Melissa + Kurt

'CURATE THIS!' vote results

Curate_This WOW! what an interesting weekend for those of us who participated in our first annual 'CURATE THIS!' event. We had over 400 guest curators casting votes from 11 countries! We were very happy and bit surprised by how many people chose to participate in this event. We've learned a thing or two along the way and look forward to some processing improvements for next year. A BIG THANK-YOU to our assistant Laura for her dedication toward achieving a successful vote tally! We couldn't have done it without her.

If you took the time to view the artists submissions in their entirety, you probably got a small taste of how difficult a process this can be. You were given the opportunity to view the submissions in an unedited state and saw the good and the not so good. We hope you had fun and we'll soon let you know the 10 guest curators who'll be receiving a complimentary copy of 'CURATE THIS!' 2008. Our next posting will announce the TOP 4 vote receiving artists who will be invited to exhibit their works during 'FOUR' opening August 2 at BECA gallery.
