BECA gallery to Host It's First International Contemporary Art Exhibition

Sleep has not been our focal point over the last several weeks but it's been more than worth it when we look at the progress of BECA so far and the unexpected outpouring of encouragement and support both locally, nationally and internationally. We thank all of you, especially Caroline Worthington who has been a great source of inspiration for the formation of our inaugural international exhibition opening February 9, 2008. So without further ado...

BECA gallery is pleased to present Connection, an international emerging contemporary art group exhibition from February 9 – March 1, 2008. This call is open to all visual artists working in 2-D and 3-D mediums. Submissions from all countries will be accepted for consideration. The theme of the exhibit follows:

--------------------------------------------------------------

connection n.1. act of connecting ; state of being connected

In our fast pace, rapidly changing world, BECA gallery has been established as a bridge to and for emerging contemporary art.

The traditional Inuit view of the world is one of intrinsic connections between all things: whether they are the integral ones of family ties, the dynamics of nature and the landscape or the spirit world. Within other cultures, today’s technologies along with the ease of global movement enable new, previously unknown, connections to manifest themselves.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Curating this exhibition is Caroline Worthington, Curator of Art, York Museums Trust, York Art Gallery.  For the past decade, Caroline has focused her curatorial practice on a diverse combination of both historic and contemporary art exhibitions. In addition to managing the highly regarded exhibition programme for York Art Gallery she is also busy commissioning new and emerging contemporary art for York St. Mary’s. Recent curatorial projects include:

York St. Mary’s:

In her ‘spare’ time, she has been a visiting lecturer at Newcastle, Sunderland, Leeds and York Universities and is a regular contributing author to Museums Journal, UK.  She is also co-founder of the Contemporary Art Society – Yorkshire. Caroline looks forward to her pioneering position and writes, “As BECA gallery’s first international curator, it seems to me that the theme of connections is an obvious choice to reflect the aspirations for their programme. Working from the UK, I’ll be weaving together those invisible threads that spin outwards from each of us, connecting you with each other as well as to BECA and me.”

Best of luck to all submitting artists!

Gulf South Regional - Call to Artists - BECA gallery to open in New Orleans, LA on January 5, 2008

We're thrilled to finally announce the opening date of the BECA gallery! BECA is an acronym for 'Bridge for Emerging Contemporary Art' and we hope to be able to offer this bridge to our future fellow local artist members, our national and international exhibiting artists as well as to our curatorial collaborators and the exhibitions they create here. Our gallery is housed in the heart of the New Orleans arts district directly across the street from the New Orleans Contemporary Arts Center and just a short walk from the Ogden Museum of Southern Art. We couldn't have asked for a better location from which to grow our project vision.

On opening day BECA gallery will present the 'Gulf South Regional Contemporary Art Exhibit' from January 5 - 31, 2008. This competition for group exhibition is open to all visual artists residing in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida working in 2-D and 3-D mediums. One artist chosen from this group exhibition will be offered a solo show at BECA gallery to open in mid-2008.
