Congratulations to local artist Cynthia Scott, one of the exhibiting artists participating in 'MIRROR for the 21st Century'. She recenty received word that she was chosen as a co-recipient along with her grant proposing partner, Damon Rosenzweig, of a highly competitive award granted by The Arts Council of New Orleans and the Joan Mitchell Foundation. They were awarded $25,000 for a 2008 New Orleans Art in Public Places Commission and we look forward to seeing the final work installed here in the city of New Orleans.

"We are truly grateful for the support of our international guest curator Helen Pheby and those artists who submitted their work for consideration. This dedicated international component of our gallery program brings something very unique to the city of New Orleans. It allows us to make many innovative and exciting works by emerging international artists available to both collectors and art enthusiasts. Most of the works in this show from abroad are not currently available in any other US city outside of New York. It's been hard work but also extremely rewarding at the same time." - Melissa and Kurt, co-directors.

‘MIRROR FOR THE 21ST CENTURY’ – International Group Exhibition of Contemporary Art

"As the first and only gallery in New Orleans to dedicate such a large component of its exhibition program to introducing some of the most innovative and exciting emerging international contemporary art to New Orleans collectors and art enthusiasts, we have been grateful for the interest and support of some of the art world's leading curators and visionaries. By believing in our unique program and choosing to partner with us as international guest curators, they have been an integral part in helping to bring about the success of these major international group exhibitions."  - Melissa Roberts and Kurt Schough, BECA gallery co-directors

Mirrorfront The theme of BECA gallery’s second international exhibition is ‘MIRROR for the 21st Century’ juried by Helen Pheby, PhD, Deputy Curator, Yorkshire Sculpture Park, England. YSP is an international centre for modern and contemporary art and is the largest of its kind in Europe with revolving exhibitions by artists including Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, Sir Anthony Caro, Mark di Suvero, Sol LeWitt, Ulrich Ruckriem, Antony Gormley, Winter/Hörbelt and works by James Turrell and Andy Goldsworthy in the landscape. It consists of eight outdoor exhibition spaces set within a 500 acre, 18th-century, country estate and four indoor galleries that total the largest indoor contemporary exhibition space outside London. Along with curating exhibitions and projects at YSP, Helen is working with communities worldwide to improve accessibility to and the appreciation of the arts, including helping forward the foundation of a sculpture park in Kurdistan-Iraq and several public art projects in the UK.

Helen writes of 'MIRROR for the 21st Century', “The works in the exhibition illustrate various and diverse aspects of life in the twenty-first century. From cultural references that position the maker’s place in history, such as space flight and genetic research, through the use of media available only by recent technological developments, to a specific but momentary fingerprint in time, the exhibition reflects our contemporary age; its concerns; its hopes and, above all, its beauty.”
